Glossary

Cellulose: a polysaccharide consisting of chains of glucose monomers. It is the main constituent of plant cell walls.

Lignin: a complex organic polymer.

Cutin: a waxy water repellent substance occurring in the cuticle of plants and consisting of highly polymerized esters of fatty acids.

Epidermal cells: the outer layer of cells covering an organism.

Impermeable: waterproof/ doesn’t allow passage of water.

Cork layer: part of the periderm(outer tissue of the stem) that protects the inner plant tissues from mechanical injuries, water loss, and pathogens, and comprises cells that are dead at maturity and filled with air, tannins or resins. Supplement.

Suberin: an inert impermeable waxy substance present in the cell walls of corky tissues.
